The following is one example of many of why the Buyers Guide has valuable and important information prior to purchasing a Collectible Car.

I recently saw a 1970 AAR Cuda advertised in a national publication as a rotisserie restoration (equivalent to a body-off restoration for Mopars).

  • The engine was not original, but was a correct 70 340 T/A motor.
  • The car was priced at $16,500.00. This was an exceptional value as a rotisserie restoration takes about 500 hours minimum to complete and at $40.00 per hour labor rate = $20,000.00 for LABOR ONLY, and that is without original car purchase price or parts $16,500 sounded real good.
Sometimes, if a cars price seems to good to be true, it probably is. Using my alternate serial number locations: The serial number located on the dashboard was correct to indicate the car was an AAR Cuda, but the body serial number did not match with the VIN# on the dashboard. Thus the car had been built into an AAR Cuda that may have been beyond all hope of restoration or junked. Its serial number, fender tags and components were transferred to another body. This may not sound too bad at first but there can be serious negative results from this.

Let's say you purchased this car, not knowing this information, and the owner may or may have not known and didn't or couldn't tell you anything about the history. You take the car to a car show and a knowledgeable judge or Hobbyist checks the sequential serial number and tells you they don't match, you own a six cylinder Barracuda built into an AAR Cuda. Now you know you have been duped, but by whom? The past owner or the past third owner? And what recourse do you have at this point? This can of worms only gets bigger, and the consequences could be numerous as well as costly…

It is a felony by federal law to remove a cars serial number, be it junk or otherwise.

Either one of the 2 cars involved in building one complete car could be confiscated by any law enforcement agency in any state. You would have to prove your innocence to the authorities, and the car would go back to the owner if reported stolen. You lose all of the money, time, etc. that you invested in the car, which may or may not be reimbursed by your insurance company. Should you sell a car in which the body serial number does not match the VIN# and the buyer discovers this, you could be held entirely liable.

Believe me when I tell you, there are lots of cars like this out there for sale. When you request information from our Research Dept. of our Buyers Guide, you can avoid some of the many pitfalls that can await the first time and/or uninformed buyer.

I will be giving my hands on insight of 30 years of experience in what to look for in every year of Muscle Car available.. Examples are chronic common rust outs, how to tell if the engine is original, or numbers match or if it is a fake, clone or original.

Example Question

This example was a recent request.

The customer wanted to know how much a 72 Monte Carlo SS was worth that he had put a deposit on. He said it was an SS 454 with Buckets and Console. He was paying $14,000 for the car.

Our response: No SS Monte Carlos were made in 1972, only the Monte Carlo Customs took the place of the SS option in 1972. At $14,000 he was paying $7,000 more than he car was worth as it was a fake. He didn't buy the car, but if he hadn't contacted us and had bought the car he would have lost $7,000!!! Instead we saved him $14,000 on a bogus car.
