The Lemans, the trim upgrade of the Tempest, is often referred to as the little brother of the GTO. It is a well deserved moniker, as physical appearance differs very little on the two models. The Pontiac LeMans was a model name applied to compact and intermediate-sized autos offered by the Pontiac division of General Motors from 1962 to 1981. In 1971, the Tempest nameplate was completely retired and Pontiac promoted the LeMans nameplate to full-series status to identify all of its intermediate models, which still included the GTO. Manufactured across six generations, the LeMans was replaced by the downsized Pontiac Bonneville for the 1982 model year and resurrected for model years 1988-1993 as a rebadged Daewoo LeMans.

Chief Engineer John DeLorian, who was instrumental in the development of the LeMans and especially the GTO, even dabbled in some unique performance LeMans models, including a Sprint package that included a hopped-up four-barrel version of the 230 CID OHC six that also included higher compression ratio and hotter cam, resulting in 207 horsepower, along with an "all-syncro" floor-mounted three-speed transmission with Hurst shifter, suspension kit, and body striping.

The LeMans also rose to popularity in the Muscle Car Era. Many enthusiasts could not afford the top of the line GTO, or did not want to modify an original example. Instead, they opted for the LeMans, transplanting performance engines and modifying them into Street Machines. To this day, there are thousands of these Pontiacs still roaming the streets and drag strips across the nation.
