1967 A-FORD MUSTANG SHELBY GT500
Click Photo (More Info.)
TO CLARIFY, THIS IS NOT A CLONE, REPRODUCTION, TRIBUTE CAR, OR KIT CAR. THIS IS 1967 SHELBY GT500 #231. THIS IS NOT A MYSTERIOUS RECENT BARN FIND THAT APPEARED OUT OF THIN AIR. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN VEHICLE, COMPLETE WITH DOCUMENTATION, OWNER HISTORY, AND RACE HISTORY. DOCUMENTED IN THE 1967 SHELBY REGISTRY, ADMINISTERED BY DAVE MATTHEWS, 1967 SHELBY REGISTRAR, SHELBY AMERICAN AUTO CLUB(SAAC). APPEARED IN MAGAZINES AND ALSO THE 2004 COVER CAR FOR BRANDA MUSTANG PARTS. DEALER INSTALLED 427 SIDE OILER. FOUR SPEED. STILL IN THE RACE TRIM FROM THE LATE SIXTIES. THOROUGHBRED INVESTMENT QUALITY EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN MUSCLE CAR HISTORY. RARE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A BONA FIDE REPRESENTATION OF CARROLL SHELBY'S LEGACY.

No auto enthusiast, especially Shelby Mustang collectors, require a history lesson in Carroll Shelby and his creations, so none will be given. However, there are some noteworthy facts concerning the year 1967 and the 1967 models that may be of interest to some readers. 1967 was the year the GT500 was launched, and it was certainly a departure from Shelby's usual design. Up to this point, his facility was mainly producing very aggressive, road racing style vehicles that were not suited to mundane, every day driving. The 1967 GT500 was a functional blend of road racing and muscle car components, and it succeeded in satisfying the demands of the purchasing public. 1967 models can also be considered the last of the "hand built by Shelby" automobiles. In August of 1967, Shelby lost his lease on the facility at Los Angeles International Airport. Beginning in December of 1967, the Ford Plant in Metuchen, New Jersey began shipping the 1968 models to A.O. Smith in Ionia, MI. for conversion under Ford control. Shelby moved his operation to Torrance, CA., but Shelby American had substantially less involvement after this time.

As per Elite Marti Report, early production number of 231 of 2,048 GT500 Mustangs manufactured in 1967. Further breakdown of the report reveals; One of 1,376 manufactured with four speed transmission. Of these, one of 246 in Wimbleton White. 229 of them featured Black Decor Bucket Seats. Of this number, 165 were Basic Order (No A/C or thermotractor). Documented in the 1967 Shelby Registry with a K designation. Registry has not been updated with vehicle history.

Believed to be featured as a cover car for Shelby American Magazine. A copy of the photo is with the car. In this photo, number 231 is featured on the assembly line at the Shelby Los Angeles production facility. The correct white rectangle with the hand written number 231 is affixed to the center base of the windshield. Photo is displayed below. In addition, Tony Branda displayed number 231 on the cover of his 2004 "Tony Branda Shelby and Mustang Parts" catalog.

An interesting and unusual history is associated with Shelby Mustang number 231. The vehicle was manufactured in January of 1967 and shipped to Eger Motors Inc. in McKeesport, PA. Delivered in March of 1967. In lieu of offering this beauty for sale to the public, the car was transformed into a dealer sponsored drag car. The Shelby was campaigned for several years at the drag races. The first private owner did not take possession until September of 1971. At that time, there were less than 400 miles on the odometer.

The 428 Cu. In. Police Interceptor engine was removed. A modified 427 Cu. In. side oiler engine was installed. Backed by the heavy duty top loader four speed, this ground pounder raced at mostly local Pittsburgh area tracks. The Mustang was eventually retired, and as stated, sold in 1971 to a private party. The car was left in the same trim as modified by Eger. To this day, the 427 engine and transmission are still installed in the engine bay. This car is still basically in the same configuration as 1971. This is not an example of a MCA or SAAC concourse restoration. Rather it maintains many of the original components, many of the components installed by 1971, with some mechanical maintenance and cosmetic upgrades.

Original VIN number is 7R02Q146877. Shelby VIN is 67400F4A00231. Factory options include Power Steering, Power Disc Brakes, Shoulder Harnesses, Magnum Wheels, AM Radio, Fold Down Rear Seat, Extra Cooling Package, Courtesy Light Group, and Interior Decor Group.

Exterior finish is factory code M-Wimbleton White. Fiberglass Shelby scooped hood. Fiberglass trunk lid and spoiler. Fiberglass front extensions. Shelby GT500 striping and emblems. Four side scoops. Driving lights mounted in center grille. Single sport mirror with remote. Magnum fifteen inch wheels with Firestone Wide Ovals, F60x15. All glass is in very good condition. Chrome and stainless in good condition also. Fit, finish, and gapping is very good.

Interior is black decor bucket seat. Basically, the complete interior is original. Front buckets are in decent shape. There is a seam split on the lower cushion of each bucket seat. Rear seat is in very good condition. Door panels, headliner, dash, and carpet in good condition. Woodgrain steering wheel. Hurst shifter. 140 MPH speedometer. Rally Pac with 8,000 RPM tach mounted in correct location under the dash. Factory AM radio. Roll bar. Shoulder harnesses.

In the engine bay is the 427 Cu. In. side oiler engine installed by Eger Motors. Dual four barrel carburetors mounted on an aluminum intake manifold. LeMans rods and crank. Cross bolted main bearings. Medium riser heads. Headers flow into dual exhaust with equalizer pipe, and Flowmaster mufflers. Top loader four speed transmission. Nine inch rear differential.

Undercarriage is not highly detailed. At some point it was painted black. However, it is clean and solid. Jack and spare are mounted in the trunk. Spare is Goodyear Polyglas. Trunk is finished in black, not factory paint. It is unknown whether this was done at Shelby or at Eger Motors. This is the only one we've seen painted black.

Documented 1967 GT500 Mustangs don't become available for sale very often. This is an opportunity for the Shelby enthusiast to own an example of automotive history.
